What is a Birth Star (Janma Nakshatra)?

Your Birth Star, or Janma Nakshatra, is the constellation (one of the 27 Nakshatras of the sidereal zodiac) that the Moon occupied at the exact moment of your birth. In Vedic astrology the Moon represents the mind, emotions, and instinctive nature, so the Nakshatra it sits in is treated as a very personal marker — it is the star most Panchang-based rituals, naming conventions, and daily auspiciousness checks (like Tara Bala) are built around.

Why This Calculator Shows Two Nakshatras

This calculator reads your Birth Star from two separate points of your chart: the Moon's Nakshatra (the traditional Janma Nakshatra used for naming, Tara Bala, and most Muhurta work) and the Lagna's Nakshatra (the Nakshatra occupied by your rising sign, or Ascendant). Both are calculated from your exact birth date, time, and place using sidereal (Lahiri ayanamsa) positions, and each is shown with its Pada— the quarter (1st to 4th) of the Nakshatra's 13°20' span that the point falls within.

The two rarely match, and that is expected: the Moon moves quickly through the zodiac while the Ascendant is fixed by your birth time and location alone. Most traditional references to “your Nakshatra” mean the Moon's Nakshatra, but some remedial and naming traditions also consider the Lagna Nakshatra, which is why both are presented here.

Significance of the Birth Star

The Janma Nakshatra and its Pada are traditionally used for several purposes: selecting the first syllable of a name (Namakarana), determining Tara Bala (day-to-day compatibility of the transiting Moon with your birth star), matching horoscopes for marriage (Ashta Koota Guna Milan), identifying your Nakshatra's ruling deity and planetary lord, and — in many remedial traditions — as one of the reference points for recommending a birthstone or gemstone associated with the Nakshatra's ruling planet.
