About Janma Nakshatra

What is Janma Nakshatra?

Janma Nakshatra, or your Birth Star, is the Nakshatra (lunar mansion) that the Moon occupied at the exact moment of your birth. The sidereal zodiac is divided into 27 Nakshatras, each spanning 13°20' of the ecliptic. Because the Moon governs the mind and emotions in Vedic astrology, the Nakshatra it occupies at birth is treated as one of the most personal reference points in a horoscope — more specific than the broader Moon sign (Rashi), which spans a full 30°.

How It Is Calculated

This calculator determines the Moon's exact sidereal (Lahiri ayanamsa) longitude for your given birth date, time, and place, then identifies which of the 27 Nakshatras that longitude falls within. Each Nakshatra is further divided into four Padas (quarters) of 3°20' each, and the calculator also reports the Pada your birth Moon falls in, since the Pada is used in some naming and compatibility traditions.

Significance of the Birth Star

The Janma Nakshatra is used across several areas of traditional practice: choosing the first syllable of a name (Namakarana) based on the Nakshatra's associated sounds, assessing day-to-day favorability of the transiting Moon relative to your birth star (Tara Bala), matching horoscopes for marriage compatibility (Ashta Koota Guna Milan, of which Nakshatra-based factors form a major part), and identifying the Nakshatra's ruling deity and planetary lord for remedial recommendations.

Why Birth Time Matters

The Moon moves through roughly one Nakshatra every day (about 13°20' of travel), which means it can shift from one Nakshatra — or one Pada — to the next within a matter of hours. For an accurate result, enter your birth date, time, and place as precisely as possible, ideally from a birth certificate or hospital record. This calculator is offered for traditional and informational reference; for naming ceremonies or other important decisions, it is best used alongside guidance from a knowledgeable astrologer.
