What is Janma Lagna (Ascendant)?

Janma Lagna, commonly called the Ascendant or Rising Sign, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of your birth. Unlike your Sun sign or Moon sign, which depend only on the date (or date and time), the Lagna depends on your precise birth time and location — the earth rotates roughly one full sign every two hours, so the Ascendant changes far faster than any other chart point.

In Vedic astrology, the Lagna is treated as the anchor of the entire birth chart (Kundli). It marks the cusp of the 1st house, and every other house and planetary placement in the chart is measured relative to it.

How the Ascendant is Calculated

This calculator uses your birth date, time, and place to determine the precise sidereal (Lahiri ayanamsa) longitude of the eastern horizon point at the moment of birth. That longitude falls within one of the twelve zodiac signs — the sign shown as your Janma Lagna — and the calculator also reports the exact degrees within that sign, along with the Nakshatra (lunar mansion) and Pada (quarter) the Ascendant point falls in.

Significance of the Lagna

The Lagna Rashi is traditionally considered closely tied to physical appearance, temperament, and how a person instinctively presents themselves to the world — distinct from the Moon sign (mind and emotions) or Sun sign (core identity and vitality). Many branches of chart analysis, including planetary strength (Shadbala), house-lordship assessments, and the timing of life events, are read relative to the Lagna rather than any other reference point, which is why it is often called the most important single point in a Vedic horoscope.
