Calculated using the classical Ashta Koota (8-Guna Milan) system based on the Moon's nakshatra and pada of both partners, using sidereal (Lahiri) positions. A minimum of 18 points is generally considered acceptable; Nadi and Bhakoot doshas are traditionally treated as significant regardless of total score.
About Horoscope Matching (Ashta Koota Guna Milan)
What is Kundali Matching?
Kundali Matching, also called Guna Milan or Ashta Koota (“eight-fold”) matching, is the classical Vedic method for assessing compatibility between a prospective bride and groom before marriage. It compares the Nakshatra (birth star) and Rashi (Moon sign) of both partners across eight distinct Kootas, or compatibility factors, each contributing a score toward a total of 36 Gunas (points).
The Eight Kootas
Each Koota examines a different dimension of the relationship: Varna (spiritual temperament and ego compatibility), Vashya (mutual control and attraction), Tara (health and general wellbeing of the couple), Yoni (sexual and biological compatibility), Maitri (friendship between the Moon sign lords, indicating mental compatibility), Gana (temperament — deva, manushya, or rakshasa nature), Bhakoot (overall relationship harmony and prosperity), and Nadi(health of progeny and genetic compatibility). Each Koota is calculated from the boy's and girl's Nakshatra and Nakshatra Pada as derived from their birth details.
Interpreting the Score
A total of 18 or more points out of 36 is generally considered an acceptable match in classical practice, with higher scores traditionally read as more favourable. However, the total score alone does not tell the whole story: Nadi Dosha and Bhakoot Doshaare traditionally treated as significant concerns regardless of the overall total, since Nadi relates to the health of future children and Bhakoot to the couple's general harmony and prosperity. Many traditions look for specific remedial measures or exceptions (such as differing Rashi lords or Nakshatra padas) before treating a dosha as a strict disqualifier.
How to Use This Tool
Enter accurate birth date, time, and place for both partners — Ashta Koota is sensitive to the exact Nakshatra and Pada, which depend on precise birth details. The result shows the per-Koota breakdown, the total score, and any doshas identified. Guna Milan is one traditional input among several factors couples and families consider; it is not a complete assessment of relationship compatibility, and significant doshas or borderline scores are best discussed with an experienced astrologer who can weigh remedies and exceptions specific to both charts.
