What is Mangal Dosha (Manglik)?
Mangal Dosha, also known as Kuja Dosha or being “Manglik,” is a placement in Vedic astrology formed when the planet Mars (Mangal) occupies certain houses of the birth chart. Since Mars represents energy, assertiveness, and conflict, its presence in specific houses is traditionally believed to influence marital harmony, which is why this dosha is checked most often before marriage matchmaking.
How It Is Calculated
This calculator determines the exact sidereal position of Mars in your Lagna (Ascendant) chart based on your birth date, time, and place. Mangal Dosha is traditionally considered to form when Mars is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house counted from the Ascendant — North Indian tradition emphasises 1st/4th/7th/8th/12th, South Indian tradition adds the 2nd house, and most modern readings check the combined set. The 7th and 8th houses are generally regarded as the most significant, while the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 12th are often considered comparatively milder.
Cancellation (Mangal Dosha Bhanga) & Interpretation
Classical astrology also lists several conditions under which Mangal Dosha is considered cancelled or significantly reduced (called Dosha Bhanga) — for example, when Mars occupies its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or its sign of exaltation (Capricorn), when it is aspected by a benefic like Jupiter, or when both partners in a proposed marriage are found to be Manglik, which is traditionally believed to neutralize the effect between them. Because of these exceptions, a simple house placement should not be read in isolation — the full chart context matters.
Remedies & Practical Considerations
Commonly suggested remedies include performing a Mangal Shanti Puja, chanting the Hanuman Chalisa or Mangal-related mantras regularly, fasting on Tuesdays, and in some traditions, performing a symbolic Kumbh Vivah (marriage to a peepal tree or Vishnu idol) before the actual wedding. This calculator is offered for traditional and informational reference; matchmaking decisions are best made with the guidance of a qualified astrologer who can review the complete chart of both individuals.
