About Pancha Pakshi Shastra

What is Pancha Pakshi Shastra?

Pancha Pakshi Shastra (पंच पक्षी शास्त्र) is a traditional South Indian system, especially popular in Tamil Nadu, that assigns every person a symbolic “birth bird” from a set of five: Vulture, Owl, Crow, Cock (Rooster), and Peacock. Each bird is said to embody a different mix of the five elements and a distinct core temperament, and the system is traditionally used to identify auspicious and inauspicious periods across the day and night for the activities of that bird.

How Your Birth Bird Is Determined

This calculator uses your birth date, time, and place to find your birth Nakshatra (lunar constellation) and your Paksha — whether the birth fell in the Shukla Paksha (waxing/bright fortnight) or Krishna Paksha (waning/dark fortnight) of the lunar month. Classical Pancha Pakshi reference tables map each Nakshatra, combined with the Paksha, to one of the five birds — the same Nakshatra can point to a different bird depending on whether the Moon was waxing or waning at birth.

The Five Birds and Their Cycle

Traditionally, each of the five birds is believed to cycle through five states over the course of a day and night — Ruling, Eating, Walking, Sleeping, and Dying — with each state considered progressively more or less favourable for starting new activities. Practitioners of this Shastra use detailed almanacs that track which bird is in which state, hour by hour, to choose favourable Muhurats for travel, business, and important undertakings, in addition to reading the birth bird itself as an indicator of a person's core nature.

Using This Result

The result above identifies your personal birth bird based on your Nakshatra and Paksha. Treat it as a traditional, symbolic indicator of temperament rather than a scientific classification — for detailed hour-by-hour activity timings and compatibility readings between birds, this is best explored further with a practitioner experienced in Pancha Pakshi Shastra.
