About Finding Your Rashi by Name

What is Namakshar?

In Vedic astrology, when a child's Rashi and birth Nakshatra (lunar constellation) are known, tradition assigns a specific starting syllable — called Namakshar — for naming the child. Each of the 27 Nakshatras is divided into four quarters (charans), and every quarter is linked to one of these naming syllables, which in turn map back to one of the twelve Rashis. This is why many traditional Indian names are chosen to begin with a particular sound.

How This Tool Works

This tool reverses that logic: it takes the first letter of the name you enter and matches it against the set of Namakshar syllables associated with each Rashi, then returns the most likely Rashi for that starting sound. It is a quick, traditional shortcut for cases where the exact birth time isn't known or handy.

Accuracy & Limitations

A name-based match is only an approximation. Not everyone is named strictly according to their birth Namakshar — family tradition, popular usage, and transliteration differences (the same sound can be spelled several ways in English) can all affect the first letter of a name. Two people with very similar-sounding names can, in principle, have different actual Rashis.

For a Precise Result

If you know your exact birth date, time, and place, the Moon Sign Calculator on this site computes your true Rashi directly from the Moon's position at birth, which is the more reliable method whenever it's available.
